Considering Kashima-Coated Rear Caliper Pistons for My XR250 BAJA: Measuring the Fit

Hello everyone.

A while ago, I replaced the front brake caliper pistons on my XR BAJA (Honda XR250 BAJA) with Kashima-coated ones.

XR250 Brake Caliper Pistons: Swapping to Yamaha Kashima-Coated Pistons

Swapping the XR250 BAJA (MD30) brake caliper pistons for Yamaha Kashima-coated ones: size check, weight (44.6 g vs 17.0 g) and Metal Rubber.

The rear still has the original pistons, though, so I decided to measure the caliper and the Kashima-coated piston I'd already got ready.

Measuring the bore of the XR250 BAJA rear brake caliper with a digital caliper: 26.95 mm

First, the diameter of the piston bore in the caliper: 26.95 mm.

Measuring the outside diameter of the Kashima-coated piston: 26.87 mm

The outside diameter of the Kashima-coated piston I got ready: 26.87 mm.

So it should slide in without any trouble.
Next, the length (or should I say height?).

Measuring the depth of the XR250 BAJA rear brake caliper bore: 31.74 mm

The depth of the caliper bore is 31.74 mm.

Measuring the length of the Kashima-coated rear caliper piston: 27.05 mm

The height (or length?) of the piston is 27.05 mm.

Hmm. If I remember correctly, the original rear caliper piston is 31 mm long, so this one is 4 mm shorter.
Even with worn pads, the piston won't pop out, but...

I need to think about this a bit more.

I explain how I clean the caliper pistons (pushing them out and back to clean them) in this article.

How I cleaned and worked the rear brake caliper piston on my BMW G650GS: pushing it out with the pedal, wiping it with Kimwipes, turning it with piston pliers, Metal Rubber, and safety checks afterwards.
