Fitting the NGC Smooth Drive System to My XR250 BAJA: 3 Places, 40 Minutes and How It Felt After a Year

Hello everyone.

Today I'm writing about fitting the NGC Smooth Drive System to my XR BAJA (a 2000 Honda XR250 BAJA).

The Smooth Drive System is a set of parts that claims to release (discharge) static electricity built up in the bike.
Opinions differ on whether it changes how a bike rides, and some people call it a placebo part.

In this article, I only describe where I fitted it and what I felt when riding.

The short answer

  • I fitted it in 3 places. The job took about 40 minutes
  • No dramatic change, but the bike felt easier to ride (just my impression)
  • No failures after more than a year, but I can no longer tell whether the effect has lasted

The 3 places I fitted it

On my XR BAJA, I fitted it in these 3 places.

  • The band on the insulator between the carburettor and the engine
  • The band on the insulator between the air cleaner box and the carburettor
  • The joint between the swingarm and the rear link

The job took about 40 minutes.
No special tools are needed, but the spaces are tight, so it took a bit of effort.

The 3 places on the XR BAJA where I fitted the NGC Smooth Drive System (red arrows)

The red arrows in the photo above show the 3 places.

The bolt on the insulator band between the carburettor and the engine, replaced with the NGC one (yellow arrow)

I replaced the standard bolt on the insulator band between the carburettor and the engine with the NGC one.

The bolt on the insulator band between the carburettor and the air cleaner box, replaced with the NGC one (yellow arrow)

This is the bolt on the insulator band between the carburettor and the air cleaner box.
I replaced this standard bolt with the NGC one as well.

The NGC part fitted over the existing nut where the swingarm and rear link join

This is where the swingarm and rear link join.
It simply goes on over the existing nut, so it was easy.

What I felt when riding

To get straight to the point: I didn't feel a dramatic change, but I did feel that the bike had become easier to ride!

  • Pulling away from idle felt stronger, with less jerkiness at low speed
  • Acceleration felt smoother
  • The engine felt stronger

It felt as if the engine had grown a little in capacity, smooth and strong like a modern fuel-injected bike.

However, this is just my impression. I have no measured data.
Reviews online include both "it made a difference" and "no change at all", so it seems to vary from person to person.

After more than a year

When I wrote this article (November 2025), it had been fitted for more than a year, and none of the parts had failed.

But since I've kept riding the bike all along, honestly, I can hardly tell any more whether the effect has lasted.

Summary

  • Fitted in 3 places on my XR BAJA; the job took about 40 minutes
  • Not dramatic, but the bike felt easier to ride (my impression)
  • No failures after more than a year

How much difference you feel varies from person to person.
If you're curious, please try it with that in mind.
